Garfield Elementary School
Garfield Elementary School is part of the Lorain City Schools district and has a unique approach to education. The school believes in fostering a positive climate for students and staff using a Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support approach (PBIS), emphasizing kindness and creating a supportive environment for all. The school has several key programs and features, including comprehensive arts instruction for preschoolers, which was made possible by a $378,000 grant from the Ohio Arts Council. This funding supports twice-weekly arts instruction by local teaching artists, family-focused arts events, and expanded creative learning opportunities for the youngest students. Additionally, the school provides free breakfast and lunch to all K-12 students, regardless of economic status, and emphasizes the importance of attendance through its "Make School Attendance a Priority" program. The integration of arts into early education and the emphasis on kindness through PBIS set Garfield Elementary School apart, highlighting its commitment to holistic education and student well-being.
